PPM ↔ Molarity Conversion

PPM (parts per million) and molarity (mol/L) are both units of concentration. PPM expresses concentration as milligrams of solute per liter of solution (mg/L), while molarity expresses it as moles of solute per liter of solution.

Formulas

  • PPM to Molarity: Molarity (M) = (PPM × Density) / (Molecular Weight × 1000)
    • Where:
      • Density is typically 1 g/mL for aqueous solutions.
      • Molecular Weight is in g/mol.
  • Molarity to PPM: PPM = (Molarity × Molecular Weight × 1000) / Density

Calculations

  • For Aqueous Solutions (Density ≈ 1 g/mL):
    • PPM to Molarity: M = PPM / Molecular Weight / 1000
    • Molarity to PPM: PPM = M × Molecular Weight × 1000

Examples

  1. Sodium Chloride (NaCl, Molecular Weight ≈ 58.44 g/mol):
    • 1000 PPM NaCl to Molarity:
      • M = 1000 / 58.44 / 1000 ≈ 0.0171 M
    • 0.1 M NaCl to PPM:
      • PPM = 0.1 * 58.44 * 1000 = 5844 PPM
  2. Glucose (C6H12O6, Molecular Weight ≈ 180.16 g/mol):
    • 500 PPM Glucose to Molarity:
      • M = 500 / 180.16 / 1000 ≈ 0.00277 M
    • 0.05 M Glucose to PPM:
      • PPM = 0.05 * 180.16 * 1000 = 9008 PPM
